Egypt’s new Islamist-dominated parliament is preparing to introduce a controversial law that would allow husbands to have sex with their deceased wives up to six hours after death. Known as the “farewell Intercourse” law, the measure is being championed as part of a raft of reforms introduced by the parliament that will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 for girls.
Egypt’s National Council for Women is campaigning against the changes, saying that ‘marginalising and undermining the status of women would negatively affect the country’s human development’.
Dr Mervat al-Talawi, head of the NCW, wrote to the Egyptian People’s assembly speaker Dr Saad al-Katatni addressing her concerns.
Egyptian journalist Amro Abdul Samea reported in the al Ahram newspaper that Talawi complained about the legislations, which are being introduced under ‘alleged religious interpretations’. The subject of a husband having sex with his dead wife arose in May 2011 when Moroccan cleric Zamzami Abdul Bari said marriage remains valid even after death.
He also said that women have the right to have sex with her dead husband, alarabiya.net reported.
It seems the topic, which has sparked outrage, has now been picked up on by Egypt’s politicians.
TV anchor Jaber al Qarmouty slammed the notion of letting a husband have sex with his wife after her death under the so-called ‘Farewell Intercourse’ draft law.
“This is very serious. Could the panel that will draft the Egyptian constitution possibly discuss such issues? Did Abdul Samea see by his own eyes the text of the message sent by Talawi to Katatni?,” the Daily Mail quoted him as telling the website.
“This is unbelievable. It is a catastrophe to give the husband such a right! Has the Islamic trend reached that far? Is there really a draft law in this regard? Are there people thinking in this manner?” he added.

Beauty Queen Loses Her Crown Because She Lied About Being Married
The rules state that those vying for the crown must be single. But Magaly Febles, director of the Miss Domincan Republic contest, said Tuesday it had been discovered that recent winner Carlina Duran was married in 2009.
Duran said in a statement read at a Wednesday night news conference that she had never lived with her husband.
"In my daily life, I remained like a single woman, without thinking of myself neither materially nor spiritually married,"said the statement, read by her lawyer.
The statement also said the marriage was brief, and the couple had begun annulment proceedings. The statement didn't specify whether the annulment was finalized.
Duran's statement called her decision to hide her marriage from the contest organizers the "fruit of my inexperience."
Febles officially handed the crown to first runner-up, 24-year-old Dulcita Lieggi, at the news conference.
The 25-year-old Duran was crowned Miss Dominican Republic on April 17,2012 and was to represent her country at the Miss Universe contest.
Don’t Admonish Me Like A Schoolchild – Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan says he does not want to be admonished like a schoolchild.
Speaking at a dinner in honour of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Monday, Jonathan however told the PDP executives despite being president he was not above the party.
He said he and other members of the Executive arm of government as well as the legislature were ready to respect party supremacy.
Jonathan said, “The President cannot be a king or maximum ruler, the President is elected by the party and must serve the party not the party serving the President. So, if he is deviating, the President must be cautioned so that all will know that the party is supreme and all must all follow the dictates of the party.
“I am not saying the President should be admonished like a primary schoolchild. Nobody in the party from the President to the least person at the ward will be superior to the party. So, you have a lot of challenges in this direction to make sure that you instil that kind of discipline. We will give you maximum cooperation.”
“The PDP is a political party and as a party, we must have guidelines and no matter the office you are holding, the party must be in a position to discipline or admonish Mr. President if he deviates.
“In South Africa, the African National Congress can admonish the President because the party is superior. And that is why in the gathering of the party, the party chairman takes precedence in order of protocol. It shows that the President himself is under the chairman.
Jonathan said he would not take issue with those criticising his administration, saying, “when you are in the ruling party, you must show more maturity”.
The President said, “We must all work to create an avenue where the party will source funding so that if you are the chairman of the party, members of the working committee, you can manage the party without excessive influence of people.
“Even though we expect all moneybags to be in PDP, but we don’t want the moneybags to influence the activities of the party and to stop that of course, we must come up with programmes that will make the party self-sustaining in terms of financing.”
The PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bamagar Tukur, said the party could not be repositioned without internal democracy and discipline.
He urged all party faithful to ensure that they do not work in cross purpose with the government.

Few weeks ago it was reported that rap star MI (Jude Abaga) was set to wed his lover of 2 years Erica Okundaye,Miss Nigeria 2010 1st runner-up.

Asa’s N700m lesbianism suit resumes hearing on Thursday
The on-going ‘Bukola Elemide & Another VS Dockland Communications Services’ N700m lawsuit between Nigerian soul singer Asa and weekly publication News of the People is set to resume this Thursday, April 26, 2012.
On Thursday, February 23, 2012 a Lagos High Court presided by Justice A.J Coker adjourned the case to April 26 after the claimants Bukola ‘Asa’ Elemide and her manager Janet Nwose were missing in court.
The 29-year-old, who was represented by her legal counsel Abraham & CO. stated that their client (Asa) was indisposed, although the defendants counsel Yinka Muyiwa opposed the claim, insisting that the singer was in France, performing.
Asa had slammed the lawsuit against the Loye Hamzat-owned celebrity magazine on November 22, 2010, after they published an article portraying the musician as a homosexual. But, through its counsel, the publication says they have done no wrong, as they culled the story from an online publication.
We are however unclear if Asa and her manager will attend the court hearing although she is back in the country. The singer recently performed live at the 12th edition of the African Movie Academy Awards which was held Sunday, April 22, 2012.
‘You’ll have to speak with our reps on this please’, Asa’s manager Janet Nwose replied when asked if Asa would attend the hearing.
And when we contacted her reps at RED Media, an exec Adebola Williams, said ‘We’ll get back to you on this’.
Asa’s Counsel Abraham & CO. has however assured that they will be in court even though they aren’t sure if Asa will be present.
Davido Apologises For Posting N10m Check Online
Up and coming artiste and brand ambassador, Davido has apologised for posting a cheque of 10million naira online yesterday.
The teenager yesterday afternoon posted on micro-blogging site, twitter, the cheque with an accompanying tweet, “Great meeting, made a little change.”
After he posted picture of the cheque, some fans descended on him saying such act was childish of him.
He later apologised to them on twitter when he tweeted hours later.
“I’m sorry to those that were offended by the picture. I never knew God would take me this far and I got a little carried away. Una own sef go come,” Davido tweeted.
This is not the first time Davido would be getting into the news for the wrong reasons.
Earlier this year, he was a victim of pictures on bed with a groupie. Days later, pictures of Davido with a girl went viral online.

University of Ibadan shut down for two weeks over students protest
The students took their protest beyond the school gates and mounted roadblocks around the UI/Ojoo road, causing serious traffic. All efforts to pacify the students failed, as they promised to continue protesting until their demands are met.
Following the two day protest, the University authority has shut down the institution for two weeks with immediate effect. Their reason for closing down the school? To abort the indefinite protest by students and to give them time to fix some of the problems the student complained about.
52 Nigerians To Be Deported From UK This Week
Fifty-two Nigerians yesterday lost their legal rights to remain in the United Kingdom.Investigation in London revealed that the arrangement have been concluded for the deportation of the affected Nigerians made up of 41 males and 11 females on a chartered flight yesterday.
Mr Muhammed Isa, Head of Immigration Section in the Nigerian High Commission, who confirmed the development, said that already, manifest documenting detailed offences of those to be deported have been forwarded to appropriate authorities in Nigeria.
He said the deportees, who breached the rules of their stay in the UK, include asylum seekers, over-stayers and convicted drug traffickers that have completed their terms.
Isa, who noted further that an enforced removal of Nigerians from the UK was ` certainly' not the preferred choice of either the Commission, the British Authority and those affected, advised Nigerians to obey the rules of their host countries and avoid getting involved in criminal activities. (NAN)
Man Tries To Bomb Lagos Church
An attempt by a 26-year-old-suspected suicide bomber to blow up a church in Ikorodu area of Lagos was foiled, yesterday, following his arrest.
The development threw residents into panic as news of alleged infiltration of the Boko Harm’s sect into Lagos spread.
The suspected suicide bomber later identified as Olasunkanmi Ismail, reportedly scaled through the fence into Methodist Church at Ita-Elewa area of Ikorodu about 7.30 am.
Suspecting his movement, some curious neighbours reportedly alerted the church’s securitymen, who subsequently apprehended Olasunkanmi, who was clad in a yellow T-shirt and a black trouser.
When searched, a can covered with a paper on which was scribbled ‘open in case of emergency’ was found in his pocket.
During interrogation, Ismail, who claimed he was sent to plant an explosive on the church’s premises, refused to disclose the identity of the sender.
A mob which gathered in front of the church attempted to lynch him, but was prevented by the church’s presbyter, Rev. Mathew Ogunsiji,who invited policemen from Ikorodu Division.
Men of the Anti-Bomb Squad later arrived the scene where a search was conducted round the church’s premises and the suspect whisked away by policemen from Ikorodu Division.
Speaking with Vanguard, Rev. Ogusiji said the suspect was found hiding somewhere near the graveyard, adding that his attempt to escape was foiled by the church’s securitymen.
He said: “We were scared when he said he was sent to plant a bomb in the church. We then contacted the Commissioner of Police, who sent a team of anti-bomb squad to a search the premises but said they did not discover any bomb. This has sent a signal to us to improve on our security system which we hope to do.’’
Spokesman for the Anti Bomb Explosive Ordance Disposal, EOD, Mr. Gbolahan, said it was a mere bomb scare.
According to him, “The issue is no issue, but just a scare. When our men were informed , our EOD technicians got there and discovered a bottle covered with an inscription, ‘in case of emergency.’
”The men applied EOD procedure and swept the entire church premises, but did not find any bomb. There is no cause for alarm.” He assured Lagosians to go about their legal businesses.

Ghanaian Actor, Van Vicker Arrested For Illegal Possession Of Fire Arms
According to gist getting in from a reliable source, top Ghanaian actor, Van Vicker was arrested in Lagos for possession of some arms last weekend.
Van Vicker was billed to attend the just concluded Africa Movie Academy Awards in Lagos on Sunday but missed the event.
He was reported to have been arrested by some men of the State Security Services (SSS) at the airport in Nigeria when some guns were found in his luggage.
He then told the SSS that the guns were props guns brought in for a movie.
Not convinced enough, he was taken to the SSS office in Ikoyi, Lagos for further investigation, where he spent the night.
The gist further has it that Van Vicker later tried contacting his families and a colleague, Uche Jombo, who was already at AMAA.
His message sent through a BlackBerry Messager (BBM) to Uche Jombo, which she didn't receive due too low battery, was received the next day.
Uche has reportedly helped with the release of the light skinned actor.

Man beheads lover…..claims she died of ‘Magun’

The Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele have paraded two suspects who allegedly killed a 42-year old woman, Mrs. Sekinat Emiola but the accussed claimed she died of Magun. .
One of the suspects, Asimiyu Ayantayo the lover of the deceased allegedly beheaded her and cut off her two hands after making love with her.
But the suspect claimed the deceased died as a result of the killer charm (magun) that was placed on her by another man.
According to him, after making love with the deceased, she “under the spell of magun, somersaulted and died” he stated.
When asked why he beheaded her after her death, he said he never wanted to use her for rituals but to make it impossible for residents in the area to identify her.
“She was my mistress. I contacted magun on her during love-making. She wanted to sommersault but I helped her. Then she started vomiting after the act and she fell down from the chair and died. It was then I beheaded her and cut off her two hands. I don’t need the body parts for anything and I did nothing with it” he explained.
His accomplice, Mr. Isiaka Akanbi, also denied involvement in the act, saying his friend only sent him to buy a sack for him but did not know the purpose for which he needed it.
The parade of the suspects attracted many onlookers in Eleyele, who thronged the State Police headquarters to catch a glimpse of the suspect and the gory picture of the lady’s head and the hands that were severed by the suspects.
Speaking with journalists on the incident, the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Tambari Mohammed, said the neighbours of the deceased alerted the police about a headless body dumped in the area.
Plagiarism Scandal Hits Nigerian CBN Governor
A United States-based Nigerian lecturer has sued the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Lamido Sanusi, for allegedly plagiarising his works.
The plaintiff, Prof. Victor Dike, of the School of Engineering and Technology, National University of Sacramento, California, said Sanusi breached his intellectual property rights without proper reference and citation in accordance with Copyright Acts in two separate convocation lectures he (Sanusi) presented.
The suit was filed on behalf of Dike by Mr. E. U. Chinedum at a Federal High Court, Abuja.

ANOTHER MENTALLY ILL TEEN RAPED IN SOWETO
A girl and a woman were arrested in Soweto on Saturday for raping a 17-year-old mentally ill boy, Gauteng police said.
The alleged perpetrators had been on the run since last Sunday, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.
One of them, also aged 17, was taken to a place of safety.
Makhubela said police suspect the boy was drugged.
“After the rape the boy told his granny what happened and she immediately came to police,” he said.
Makhubela said this rape was similar to three other unresolved cases which involved women drugging and raping men.
The Young Communist League of SA said it was disgusted by the crime.
“We demand the arm of the law to deal harshly with these criminals,” spokesman Mangaliso Khonza said in a statement.
“This gruesome behaviour that is on the increase poses questions [about] our society and as communities we have to start creating forums for speaking and curbing this behaviour…”

If this information is true, then it’s a sad reminder of what how country – Nigeria – has turned into; a place where virtually everybody tell one “small lie” or steal some “public funds” just to get ahead of others.
Policemen Attacked While Trying To Arrest Prostitutes In Kano
Over 40 officials of the Kano State Hisbah Board were injured when their team came under attack by hoodlums protesting the arrest of 80 suspected prostitutes at Kwanar Gafan in Garun Malam Local Government area of Kano State.
The attack happened after the Shari’ah police had carried out a massive raid for suspected prostitutes at the popular tomato market on Sunday afternoon.
Daily Trust gathered that hundreds of thugs, believed to be sympathizers of the arrested women, ambushed dozens of vehicles coveying the Hisbah officials and the suspects back to Kano city, pelting them with stones and beer bottles, before attacking them with sticks.

Bishop Oyedepo faces N2billion lawsuit for slapping church member
Popular pastor and founder of the Living Faith Christian Church International, David Oyedepo, will face a legal action for slapping a young lady during church service, last year.
Robert Igbinedion, a Lagos based lawyer, confirmed to Premium Times Friday that he had filed a suit, on behalf of the young lady, at the Ogun State High Court for the enforcement of the lady's fundamental rights to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, human dignity, fair hearing, and freedom from discrimination.
Mr. Igbinedion is seeking an award of N2bn as 'general and exemplary damages' against Mr. Oyedepo.
If a wrong is done to the young lady, she is bound to receive justice for that wrong," said Mr. Igbinedion, a Solicitor at Salus Populi Chambers.
Landlord Jailed For Refusing To Renovate His House
A landlord, Adebola Mabinuori, was on Thursday sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by a Customary Court in Mushin, Lagos, for failing to put his house in proper habitable condition.Mabinuori was however, given an option of N20,000 fine.
The prosecuting counsel for Mushin Local Government, Miss Oluwatayo Daramola, told the court that the house, located at No. 56, Ola St., Itire, was in a terrible condition.
According to Daramola, the landlord has an illegal school within the premises.
“There is a school being illegally operated in the house. Many children are packed together in one shop being used as a classroom.
“The shop has been extended with the use of wooden planks. There is no proper ventilation in the shop. The children could suffocate.
“The school children do not even have a toilet they can use. They defecate in the bush,” Daramola said, stressing that the house lacked hygienic sanitary facilities that the tenants could use.
“The house is in a bad state. There are no proper bathrooms and toilets. All the fourteen tenants residing in the house share one toilet which is not properly maintained.This could lead to an outbreak of cholera,’ she said.Daramola told the court that Mabinuori failed to repair the dilapidated and cracked walls of the house despite a court injunction to do so.
“ The walls of the house are beginning to cave in and the roofing sheets are defective. The landlord has refused to do anything about it.There are so many people living in that house and their lives are in danger, if the house is not renovated soon, “ the prosecutor explained.
She stated that the offence was punishable under Section 7 of the Lagos State Environmental Laws, 2011.
Mabinuori pleaded guilty and said that he was constrained to renovate the house due to the continued stay of his tenants.
“I have given the tenants quit notices but they refused to leave. It is dangerous to carry out renovations when they are still in the house,” he said.
Meanwhile, the proprietress of the school, Mrs Grace Onwunan, apologised to the court for running the school without being certified by the state government.
She said she only wanted to earn a living from owning a crèche to take care of her children.
“My husband abandoned me five years ago. The school is my only means of survival. I started as a crèche but we now have pupils from primary one to four,” she said.
The court president, Dr Abayomi Ipaye, blamed the landlord for allowing the house to depreciate to its current state, and advised the proprietress of the school to desist from running the illegal facility or face sanctions from the government.
Ipaye ordered the landlord to renovate the house before July 13 or it would be sealed up.
Crystals win Star Quest 2012!

Crystals beat the Quantum Vibes and Soul Rhythm to clinch the coveted prize of N7.5m recording contract, N3.6m cash prize, a year’s accommodation in a choice location with state-of-the-art facilities and a minivan at the grand finale of Star Quest 2012, held at the Expo hall of the Eko hotels and suites on 21 April, 2012.
Crystals, a 6 man band consists of Civian Aluebho Obehi (Vocalist), Romeo Ukwudike (Rapper), Daniel Onibudo (Keyboard), Emmanuel Oghenakogie (Drums), Tinuke Afolayan (Vocalist) and the band leader Godwin Edim Inyang (Bass).
Emmanuel Oghenakogie, who spoke on behalf of the band members, was obviously overwhelmed by their win, saying ‘we are actually grateful to God and the audience for believing in us. Though young, we are vibrant and optimistic and believed we will win. Being in the same band with all these creative minds was just the Lord’s doing’.
The show was anchored by ‘Tinsel’ actor Gideon Okeke, their house master, and was aired live from the venue only on selected stations such as AIT, STV, TVC and Africa Magic.
The hall was full to capacity, well attended by Nollywood stars, broadcasters and more.
Due to the large crowd at the venue, only two of the judges were sighted. Waje and KCEE were spotted sitting in different locations.
The young, vibrant and optimistic band, as they call themselves, wowed the audience by performing to their original composition ‘E go beta’ and ‘All of the lights’ by Kanye West, as they endeared the hearts and votes of viewers across the world.
Crystals had the support of family and loved ones, who consistently came out to cheer them after every performance.
The prize was presented by Mr Nicolas Van der Velde, the MD of Nigerian Breweries, who gave a dummy check to the winning band.
Crystals is expected to feature in Star related programmes and produce an album in the course of the year. As the 7th winners of the Star Quest reality TV show, the band has joined the league of KC Presh, D’Accord, D’Jewels, Diamondz, Juke box and The B.E.A.T, who are past winners of the competition.

It was a night of fun and merriment as actors and practitioners of Nigeria’s movie industry, Nollywood, turned out to grace the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) pre-awards party.
The exclusive gig was held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Medici bar and restaurant, V.I and was attended by notable Nollywood players and Hollywood actors such as Morris Chestnut and Rockmond Dunbar, Kunle Afolayan, Omoni Oboli, Empress Njamah, Thelma Okoduwa and more.
Though the turnout was lower than expected, the founder and chief executive officer of AMAA, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe said during her speech that she had high hopes as regards the awards ceremony, which takes place on April 22, 2012 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The theme of this year’s edition is ‘Africa Rising’, and is berthing in Lagos for the first time since its debut in 2005. The ceremony has, until this year, always been in Bayelsa state.
