Gun Scare at the United States Embassy in Abuja
There was pandemonium at the United States Embassy yesterday when suspected gunshots were heard around the vicinity of the Embassy, forcing many people to run for dear lives.
There were different accounts to the incident, as some people had told our reporters that the sound came from a knockout while others claimed that it was a gun shot fired at the Embassy which is located at plot 1075 of the Central Business Districts in Abuja.
The gunshot forced the security men to put both diplomats and staff of the Embassy on standby until after necessary security check was conducted.
A petty trader who stood around the vicinity when the gunshot was heard said, “I hear noise and see smoke; people dey run and I think say na knockout and people say na gun shot. Naim I pick my egg roll and kunu and run too.”
Some staff of the Embassy who claimed anonymity also confirmed that they were “placed on emergency following the incident across the street.”
It was further confirmed that two teenagers were being questioned around the Embassy a combined team of policemen and U.S. security officials.
It was said that the two suspects who were arrested in connection with the incident were currently in the custody of Nigerian the Nigeria Police Force. This came in a statement issued by the authority of the Embassy after the tension had died down.
The statement reads, “We believe there were shots fired in the vicinity of the US Embassy. The Nigerian authorities have two individuals in custody.
“We refer you to the Nigerian police for further information.”
Meanwhile the Nigerian Police Force had denied any knowledge of the incident.
